Why Exhibitors Choose SOL Germany for Tube

Tube is not a product-display floor, and that single fact should shape the whole brief. A great many stands here are built around the exhibitor's own running machine — a tube-bending cell, a laser tube cutter, a mill segment, an OCTG inspection rig. When a live machine is on the stand, the stand exists to serve the machine's footprint, its weight, its power draw and the safe envelope visitors need to stand and watch it work. The styling comes second. We start from the machine's general-arrangement drawing, not from a mood board, and everything else is designed outward from there.

We build in Frankfurt and drive roughly 230 kilometres north-west up the A3 to Düsseldorf. Domestic road freight, no customs file, no border on the stand itself — which matters more here than at most shows, because a Tube stand is often already moving several tonnes of steel and glass before anyone adds a machine to it. An international builder adds a customs process on top of that weight; we do not.

Floor Loading Is the First Conversation, Not the Last

A production machine does not spread its weight the way a stand does. It concentrates several tonnes onto four small feet, and those point loads are what the venue actually cares about. Messe Düsseldorf sets a load limit per square metre for each hall, and a machine that exceeds it locally has to sit on load-spreading plates that are engineered, not improvised. We need the machine's weight, its footprint and its foot positions before the design is drawn — get that wrong and the stand is redesigned on site, which is the most expensive place to redesign anything.

The Power Order Is Three-Phase and It Binds Early

Lighting and screens draw a few kilowatts. A running mill segment or a laser cutter draws far more, on three-phase supply, and the venue power order is both position-dependent and deadline-bound. The order has to match the machine's real nameplate rating, not a guess, and it has to be filed well before build-up. We take the machine's electrical spec sheet at briefing stage and file the power order against it, so the supply is where the machine is and rated for what the machine pulls.

Your Stand and Your Machine Arrive on Different Trucks

The stand ships from our workshop; the machine ships from you, often with its own riggers. The sequence is fixed and unforgiving: the structure goes up first, the machine is craned or forklifted into position through a planned access route, and the stand is finished around it. If the machine arrives before the access route is clear, or the structure closes the route too soon, the whole slot backs up. We agree the lift plan and the handover of liability — who lifts what, and when — in writing before build-up week.

Tube Is Not wire, Even in the Same Week

The two fairs share the calendar and the halls, but the buyers self-select by vertical. A tube and pipe buyer is looking for forming, cutting, welding, finishing and OCTG capability; a wire and cable buyer is looking for drawing and stranding. Messaging your pipe capability to a wire audience wastes your best frontage. We build the stand for the tube and pipe buyer specifically — the hall it sits in, the language on the wall, the demonstration flow — and treat the wire crowd as passing traffic, not the target.

OCTG Buyers Read a Stand Differently

Where oil-country tubular goods are in play, the visitor is often an inspection or procurement specialist who wants to see tolerances, coatings, threading and test data, not a lifestyle image. A stand that puts the coupon, the coating cross-section and the test certificate at readable height does more qualifying work than any render. If your product sits in the OCTG space, tell us at briefing so the stand is built to show evidence rather than atmosphere.

Biennial Means a Two-Year Stand, and a Two-Year Storage Decision

Because Tube runs every second year, a custom build is amortised across a longer gap than at an annual show, which often justifies a better structure. It also means storage between editions is a two-year commitment rather than a few months. We store structures in Frankfurt either way, but it is worth deciding at the outset whether you are buying a reusable frame that comes back in 2030 or a single-edition build — the answer changes the material specification.

Tube is the world's leading trade fair for the tube and pipe industry, and the 2028 edition runs 3–7 April at Messe Düsseldorf. It has been held every second year since 1988 and is organised by Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. It shares its week and its halls with wire, the international wire and cable fair, so the two run as one enormous metals event — together they drew more than 2,700 exhibitors across over 119,000 square metres in 2024, with Tube alone taking roughly 50,000 of them.

One thing to understand before you plan: Tube is a machinery floor. The product on show is frequently a working machine — a tube mill, a bending cell, a laser cutter, a welding line, an inspection rig for oil-country tubular goods — and the stand that surrounds it has to be engineered for its weight, its power and its safe operation. That is a different exercise from displaying a product on a shelf, and it starts earlier.

Who Exhibits at Tube and What Visitors Want

The floor covers the whole tube and pipe chain: raw materials, finished tubes and pipes, the machinery and tooling that forms and processes them, process engineering, measurement and control technology, and OCTG for the oil and gas sector. Exhibitors range from steel and alloy producers through to the machine builders whose equipment cuts, bends, welds and finishes tube.

The visitor is a technical buyer — a plant engineer, a production manager, a procurement or inspection specialist. They want to watch a machine run, understand its cycle time and serviceability, and see real tolerances and test data rather than marketing images. In the OCTG space in particular, the conversation is about threading, coatings, coupling integrity and certification. A stand that puts evidence at readable height — the coupon, the cross-section, the certificate — qualifies visitors faster than any render can.

Stand Size: Choosing Between 9, 18, 24 and 48 Square Metres

Nine square metres works for materials, coatings, fittings and fastening suppliers whose product is physically small or is essentially a specification. You get a counter, a back wall, a sample rack and standing conversations. What you cannot do at this size is run a machine with any circulation around it.

Eighteen square metres suits distributors and specialists who need a proper display and a seated conversation, and it is the largest size we would attempt without a dedicated machine position.

Twenty-four is the threshold at which a running machine becomes practical: enough floor for the reinforced plinth, the three-phase supply and a safe route for visitors to walk around the equipment rather than past it. If you intend to demonstrate anything that moves, treat 24 m² as the working minimum.

At 48 m² you can service a second machine or run one machine and still hold a private conversation, which matters when a plant buyer wants to discuss a project rather than a product. From 80 m² upward, a double-decker adds meeting capacity without consuming the ground-floor area that heavy machinery needs — and on this floor that ground-floor area, rated for load, is the scarce resource.

Common Mistakes, in Order of Frequency

The most common is treating the machine as a late detail — designing the stand first and discovering the floor-load limit, the three-phase requirement or the lift route afterwards, which forces a redesign on site. The second is filing a power order against a guessed rating rather than the machine's nameplate, so the supply is under-rated when the machine runs. The third is messaging pipe and OCTG capability to the wire audience passing the aisle, wasting the frontage on the wrong buyer. The fourth is leaving test data and certification off the stand entirely, forcing every OCTG conversation to start with a question you could have answered from the aisle. The fifth is underestimating build-up congestion in a week when wire and Tube share the halls. All five are settled at design stage or not at all.

What is not included in the price?

Four things. The floor space rental, which is between you and Messe Düsseldorf. Electrical, water, rigging and waste orders placed with the venue. The transport and riggers for your own machine. And specialty add-ons — AV beyond the listed package, furniture beyond the standard set, catering, and staffing during the show.

Can the stand carry a running tube or pipe machine?

Yes — it is the normal case here. We engineer the floor with load-spreading plates for the machine's real point loads, design a three-phase supply to its nameplate rating, and plan the access route so the machine is craned or forklifted into position after the structure is up. We need the machine's weight, footprint and electrical spec at briefing stage.

How do you handle floor loading for a heavy machine?

A production machine concentrates several tonnes onto small feet, which can exceed the venue's load limit per square metre locally. Who lifts my machine into place?

Usually your own riggers or a Messe Düsseldorf-appointed lift contractor, coordinated with our build schedule. We also agree where liability passes from our crew to the lift team, so nobody is improvising on the day.

Is there customs to pay on the stand?

No. Düsseldorf is domestic for us. We build in Frankfurt and drive roughly 230 kilometres north-west, so there is no customs file and no border on the stand itself. A machine you ship in from outside the EU is separate, stays with you, and needs its own customs and ATA carnet handling.

Which hall will I be in?

Hall and stand allocation is set by Messe Düsseldorf. Tube occupies the heavy-machinery halls, shared across the week with wire. We design to your current stand number and the hall's stated load and power limits, not to a previous edition's layout.

Do you handle the organiser paperwork?

Yes — electrical and three-phase power orders, rigging permissions, waste removal, daily cleaning and crew passes. We file on the day a contract is signed, because the services and rigging deadlines fall well before build-up and they are the ones that cannot be recovered late.

How long does install take?

A modular 9–18 m² stand goes up in one shift. A 24–48 m² custom stand with a machine position takes one to two days plus the lift and commissioning window for the machine. Premium builds use the full build-up period. Every stand is pre-assembled at our workshop first.

When do I need to lock the design?

For an early-April show, mid-February is comfortable for the structure. But the machine details bind earlier than the design does — floor loading, three-phase power and the lift route all have to be settled before the stand is drawn, so we need the machine's specification well ahead of the styling decision.

wire and Tube run together. If we exhibit at both, can you plan them jointly?

Yes, and it is the sensible approach. Same city, same week, same halls, one crew and one build-up plan. If you take a stand at each fair we coordinate the two so the freight, the crew and the build-up slots are shared rather than duplicated.

Can you handle a rush build?

Usually, for the structure. What cannot be rushed is the venue services and rigging order, or the engineering for a heavy machine — floor-load plates and a three-phase supply have fixed lead times and no builder can compress them. That is the single reason to start a Tube stand earlier than an ordinary show.

Can I visit during pre-build?

Yes, and we encourage it, particularly where a machine is involved. The workshop is about fifteen minutes from Frankfurt Airport. You see the stand assembled, check the plinth and machine position against your equipment's real dimensions, and meet the crew.

What graphics files do you need?

Vector files for logos and certification marks, and high-resolution raster images at roughly 150 dpi at final print size. For an OCTG or technical audience, send the test data, cross-sections and tolerance information you want on the wall as well as the brand assets.

How many staff should I plan for?

On 18 m², two to three. On 24 m² with a running machine, three to four — someone needs to stay with the machine while another works the aisle. At 48 m² and above, five or more. Technical buyers ask detailed process and serviceability questions, and those conversations run longer than a typical trade fair exchange.

Do you build at other Düsseldorf shows?
