The Evolution of Expo Stand Designs: Trends to Watch in 2025

Stand design today looks very different from a decade or two ago, and the changes aren’t just fashion — they reflect how trade shows and buyers have changed. Having built through a good part of this shift, I find the direction tells you a lot about where to put your money now. Here’s how stand design has evolved, and what it means for your next stand.

From print-heavy to message-light

Older stands tended to cram walls with text and images. As halls got busier and attention shorter, design moved toward one clear message and far less text — because a wall of copy is invisible at twenty metres. The modern stand says less, larger, and trusts the conversation to do the detail.

From closed to open

Earlier stands often walled themselves in with counters and booths. The understanding that openness drives footfall has pushed design toward open fronts, clear sightlines and walk-in layouts. The closed, fortress-like stand has largely given way to the welcoming, transparent one.

From display to experience

Stands used to be primarily about display — show the product, list the features. They’ve shifted toward experience: demos, interaction, things to do, a reason to stay. Buyers now expect to engage, not just look, and design has followed that expectation.

From one-off to reusable and sustainable

Where stands were once built and binned each show, cost pressure and sustainability have driven a shift to reusable, reconfigurable systems and recyclable materials. The modern default for a regular exhibitor is a stand that travels and reconfigures, not a fresh build every time.

Where it’s heading

The direction of travel — clearer messages, more openness, more experience, more reuse and sustainability, and more integrated technology where it earns its place — is likely to continue. The practical takeaway for your next stand: design for one clear message, an open and experiential layout, and reuse. That’s not just current fashion; it’s where buyer behaviour and budgets are both pointing.

Foire aux questions

How has exhibition stand design changed over time?

It’s moved from print-heavy, closed, display-focused, one-off booths toward stands with one clear message, open walk-in layouts, built-in experience and interaction, and reusable, sustainable construction. The changes track how halls got busier and buyers came to expect engagement.

What does the evolution of stand design mean for my next stand?

Design for one clear message rather than a wall of text, an open and experiential layout rather than a closed display, and reuse rather than a one-off build. That’s where both buyer behaviour and budget pressure are pointing, so it’s a safe direction to invest in.
