Explorando el impacto del diseño bien pensado de una exposición de stands en Alemania

Germany runs more major trade fairs than any country in Europe, and its halls set a high bar. A stand that passes elsewhere can read as underbuilt at Messe Frankfurt, Koelnmesse or Messe Düsseldorf. We’ve built at German shows from Automechanika in Frankfurt to DRUPA in Düsseldorf, and the same lesson comes up every time: in Germany the design decisions that matter most aren’t the decorative ones — they’re about meeting what the venue and the audience expect. Here’s what that means before you commit to a concept.

This guide is written from the building side. SOL Germany designs and builds at its Fráncfort facility and installs across the country, so what follows is the practical brief we give exhibitors, not a sales pitch.

German venues enforce real build rules

Messe Frankfurt, Messe München, Koelnmesse, Messe Düsseldorf and Deutsche Messe in Hannover each publish technical guidelines — the Standbaurichtlinien — covering stand and header heights, platform edges, sightlines to neighbouring stands, suspended rigging loads and the fire behaviour of materials. Decorative materials usually have to meet fire class B1. Electrical work is inspected. Crucially, designs are approved before build-up, so a stand drawn without these rules in mind gets flagged at the approval stage, not on site. That timing matters: there’s no slack to redesign during the few days of build-up.

Finish is read as a quality signal

German buyers infer how seriously a company takes itself from its stand’s finish, and they do it within seconds. Clean joins, solid flooring, proper lighting and real materials carry more weight here than in many markets. This isn’t about spending more — a well-built modular stand reads as solid — but nothing can look improvised. A loose panel or a wobbly platform undoes an otherwise good stand in this market.

Plan for conversations, not just display

Most German B2B fairs are working shows: buyers arrive to compare, negotiate and decide. Above roughly 18 m², your layout should carve out a place to sit and a place to demonstrate the product, not just a wall of branding. A stand that’s all display and no meeting space consistently under-performs on a German floor, where the value is captured in the conversation.

What a stand costs in Germany

Pricing tracks size and finish more than anything else. As a working guide for a stand designed, built, installed and dismantled:

  • 9 m² modular: €3,800–€5,500
  • 18 m² modular: €5,500–€8,500
  • 24 m² custom with a meeting nook: €11,500–€15,000
  • 48 m² custom: €19,000–€26,000
  • Double-decker 80 m²+: from €34,000

These figures cover design, build, graphics, lighting, install and dismantle. They exclude the floor-space rental you pay the organiser, the electrical and services you order through the venue, and specialty add-ons such as large AV or an espresso bar. Rush builds, where the lead time is tight, run 15–25% more.

One build, the whole country

We design and build in Frankfurt and install across Germany — Munich, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Hannover, Berlin, Stuttgart, Nuremberg. Building in one place and shipping nationally keeps the quality consistent from show to show, and it’s how we serve exhibitors who run several German fairs a year on one design they reuse and reconfigure.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main stand-build rules at German trade fairs?

Each venue publishes technical guidelines covering stand and header height, platform edges, sightlines to neighbours, rigging loads and the fire behaviour of materials — decorative materials usually need fire class B1, and electrical work is inspected. Designs are approved before build-up, so the rules must be met at the drawing stage.

How much does an exhibition stand cost in Germany?

As a guide: €3,800–€5,500 for 9 m² and €5,500–€8,500 for 18 m² modular, €11,500–€15,000 for a 24 m² custom build with a meeting nook, rising to €34,000+ for double-deckers. That covers design, build, graphics, lighting and install; organiser floor rental and venue services are separate.

Do I need to be in Germany to exhibit there?

No. We handle the design, approvals, build, freight and on-site crew from Frankfurt, so a company based anywhere can run a German stand without managing the local logistics themselves.
