Quirky Ideas to Make Your Exhibition Display Look More Open

Quick answer

Of all the things a stand design can get right, openness might be the most undervalued — and the most decisive for footfall.

Of all the things a stand design can get right, openness might be the most undervalued — and the most decisive for footfall. A stand people can see into is a stand people walk into. These ideas are all about one thing: making your stand feel open and easy to approach.

Protect the sightlines

The core of openness is being able to see into the stand from the aisle. Keep the eye-level band clear — no counters, walls or tall freestanding units blocking the view in. A visitor who can see the interior and your staff is far more likely to enter than one facing a wall.

Lower the barriers

Where you need a counter or a divider, keep it low or set it back so it doesn't seal the front. A waist-height counter to the side invites; a chest-height one across the front excludes. Small changes in height and placement transform how open a stand feels.

Use transparency

Glass, open frames, mesh and gaps let the eye travel into and through a stand, making it feel open even where there's structure. A transparent or semi-open back wall reads as more welcoming than a solid one and keeps the stand feeling light.

Pull the welcome to the edge

Put something inviting right at the aisle edge — a greeter, a product to touch, a screen at eye level — so the threshold feels like an invitation, not a boundary. The first metre of the stand decides whether people cross into the rest of it.

Open beats impressive

A common instinct is to build an impressive frontage that, in practice, walls people out. Openness usually beats grandeur for results: a welcoming, see-through stand converts more than an imposing, closed one. When in doubt, open it up — it's the design choice that most reliably turns footfall into conversations.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make my exhibition stand feel more open?

Protect the sightlines into the stand by keeping the eye-level band clear, lower or set back any counters and dividers, use glass and open frames for transparency, and put something inviting right at the aisle edge. An open stand is one people walk into.

Why does an open stand matter so much?

Because a stand people can see into is a stand people walk into. Openness is one of the most decisive design factors for footfall — a welcoming, see-through stand consistently converts more visitors than an imposing, closed one.
